Quote from
Mandolin Cafe message board: "I got my first dose of the Hickory
Project last Friday night, here in Carbondale, Colorado. I had the extreme
good fortune of seeing them perform live and up-close, at Steve's Guitar
Shop here in our little mountain town.
Having heard from my friend Don Paine (Pomeroy
Mandolins) that Anthony Hannigan and his band the Hickory Project would be
playing (and that Anthony was as fast or faster a picker than Chris Thile),
I made sure that I arrived at the show early. I was one of the lucky 50-60
people to get a seat in the small vintage guitar shop, where quite a few
people ended up seated outside. Later, even more were lined up on the
sidewalk; a stones-throw from Main Street.
I don't think I have ever been more satisfied with a $15 dollar show (or a
$50 dollar show for that matter). Sitting only 10-15 feet from one of the
best mandolin players I have ever heard, or seen, Anthony Hannigan was
amazing! To top it off, the rest of the band including Sue Cunningham
(fiddle), Danny Shipe (rhythm guitar), David Cavage (banjo), DA!, Steve
Belcher (acoustic bass), were top notch players, singers and song writers.
My favorite tune was Anthony's solo rendition of "Rawhide". Man, he can
make his mandolin (a Gilchrist) smoke! I especially loved the improvised
Jimmy Hendrix Voodoo Child licks he added mid-tune, which brought a huge
round of applause and cheers from the audience.
I was so taken by the band, and their sound, I drove over McLure Pass to
see them perform at the 3rd Annual Crystal Meadows Bluegrass Festival the
next night! After a long hard day of bluegrass listening ... the Hickory
Project took stage in the cool mountain air, and had the crowd up and
dancing after their opening tune. Not an easy thing to do with a large
crowd who has spent the entire day sitting in the hot mountain sun,
listening to excellent bands and who has just experienced a thirty degree
temperature drop as the sun set.
Final word ... If you haven't heard these guys (and gal), you should give
them a listen. They also have video on their latest CD, called "Big
Darby", so you can see them (on your PC or Mac) too!

From their Australian tour: "What
an exciting show! I was left breathless many times at the energy,
verve and sheer fun they had presenting their show for us. In recent times
I have made something of a study of the dynamics of a performance;
and how
impressed I was at how tight and in control this band is. No wasted time,
no wasted energy, never let the audience's attention wane, keep them
guessing and keep the show moving along all the time. Sometimes, a song
would end and while the applause was still at its height, the next song
kicked off fast and loud...."
"The Hickory
Project played to a packed house at Almost Acoustic - Sydney's
favorite venue for musicians. It's where people go to listen to music,
rather than go to get drunk or get picked up or play pool with music in the
background. The audience was probably about 70% pickers, who were
breathless at the show. It's been a long time since there was a show like
this in Australia." Mike Kear...DJ
